James has decided to apply for a patrol position with the Sheriff's department. I'm not sure how I feel about it. It is better pay, has better retirement benefits, would be much more stimulating, and there is more room for promotion and growth...all good things, right? The downside: he will have to leave for 5 months for a training academy in Ventura. It's not that far and he will most likely be able to come home most weekends; however, we have never been a part more than a couple of days in 9 years. He is so incredibly helpful with the home and children that I can't really fathom being a single mother of four for 5 months! There is also the increased danger of the new position, and him starting from the bottom and receiving terrible shifts again. All that aside, we have prayed about it and he feels like he should go for it. He did his physical and written exams today. He will have oral boards next week, and if he gets the spot he will leave Oct. 3rd for the academy! There are only 2 spots, and 11 men have applied. Please add us to your prayers...we will need them!
