Savanna's Personal Progress Dinner

Well, it's actually called the Young Women In Excellence Program (or something like that). Once a year the young women have a dinner and invite their families. They display all that they have been working on throughout the year. Savanna has been working on the value of Knowledge. I am so proud of all she has accomplished this year. She really has acquired much knowledge. Here are just a few examples...

This past year Savanna has learned:

How to read blue prints and draw floor plans

Basic sewing: how to use her sewing machine, how to follow a pattern, how to hem, & how to make headbands and pillows

How to play the piano (this is her second year) and conduct music

How to bake french bread and cupcakes from scratch

How to prepare and give a 5 minute talk

How to study her scriptures better

How to take care of an infant: cloth diapering, regular diapering, burping, rocking, bathing etc. (thank you, Emma!)

In order to complete a value, you are required to do a ten hour project associated with that value. For knowledge, Savanna chose to work on her sewing skills for her project. She ended up making a skirt, pillows, and a couple headbands.

Here it is!

Learning to sew a pattern with Sister Powers. They are making a darling pencil skirt.

Her first zipper!

Almost done, just need to hem and finish the waistband.

Measurements worked! It fit perfect!!

The final product: Pictures don't do this skirt justice. It is a cool striped pattern, so it comes out in the photos all crazy-like (click on it to make it bigger and you'll get a better idea of how it really looks!).

The Actual Dinner:

The dinner was very nice. Each young woman had to prepare a talk on the theme for the year which came from Joshua 1:9- "Be strong and of a good courage..." The food was wonderful (Savanna brought some of her homemade french bread), the girls' talks were beautiful, and it was fun to see how much everyone had accomplished. Each young woman also was recognized for her achievements and received some cute gifts to take home. Savanna displayed her trifold and sewing projects proudly. She is awesome!

"The girls."

They also had a cupcake contest. So, this was the plate we submitted to the judges. They don't look like much, but for our first homemade cupcakes they were darn good! We didn't win, but one of the judges said that she thought ours was the best tasting. We tried a few others, and I'd have to agree. :)

Some of our competition.

The girls received these necklaces to take home (my boys were able to take one too- we removed the ribbon so it was more manly).

Another keepsake to remind them of the importance of courage in their lives.

Each of the girls receive a bookmark and as they complete each of the Young Women's values they receive different colored ribbons that fit into the bookmark. Savanna completed her knowledge virtue, so she now has her first ribbon in her bookmark (the color for knowledge is green).

Overall, it was a successful and inspiring night. I am so proud of Savanna and all of our youth. They have a lot to overcome these days, but I have every confidence that they will grow into responsible, loving, and faith-filled women.
